InnSpire 2016 - Celebrating 25 Years of CABBI

The 2016 InnSpireSM Conference & Trade Show, hosted by CABBI, was held January 31 – February 2 at the Monterey Marriott. Conference attendees experienced several days of unparalleled educational workshops, master classes and the largest trade show in InnSpire history.

Here's what InnSpireSM 2016 attendees had to say:

“The conference was excellent. Very informative, well organized and relevant. I have attended dozens and dozens of conferences over the years in various industries and [CABBI] put together one of the very best I have ever attended.” – Jim Smith, First Time Attendee

“This was probably the very best CABBI conference that I have attended in the 25 years that I have been part of CABBI.” – Susan Wheelwright, Seven Gables Inn

“I was very glad I was able to attend the InnSpire conference. It was very much a learning experience both from fellow attendees and exhibitors. I came away with several action items plus new friends. I look forward to next year in Long Beach!” – Tony Gangloff, POSH Palm Springs

2016 Conference Highlights

This year’s conference was kicked off on Sunday afternoon by keynote speaker Nancy Friedman. Nancy, aka The Telephone Doctor, not only brought her customer service expertise to our attendees but energized everyone with her knowledge and enthusiastic presentation. Thank you to our keynote sponsor Service Freak Academy. The keynote session was immediately followed by our opening reception on the trade show floor. This year’s reception was Mardi Gras themed and attendees were invited to put on some beads and enjoy a variety NOLA-themed treats, including hushpuppies and king cake. This year’s trade show was the largest in InnSpire history with 53 vendors. Click here to see the full list of vendors at the 2016 trade show.

The education continued on Monday with the popular Roundtable Sessions, featuring 11 topics from industry experts, covering legal updates, attracting millennials, employee handbooks, working in the “cloud”, 2016 trends and more. Monday afternoon provided attendees more time for shopping and meeting one-on-one with our vendors. This year’s vendors covered a variety of products and services including Internet marketing, guest amenities, textiles, hotel financing, property management systems and more.

Monday closed with our 25th anniversary celebration, where vendors and guests joined in for a night of wine, food and a toast to 25 years of CABBI. Dinner was inspired by our host city of Monterey and included the chef’s award-winning clam chowder, crab cakes and calamari. Guests were entertained by the night’s emcee Jim Pelley, a former writer for Saturday Night Live. Jim also helped lead a game of “CABBI Jeopardy” where our three pairs of innkeepers answered industry questions and battled it out for bragging rights (and a bottle of wine). Congratulations to our winning team Jim Beazley, Beazley House Bed & Breakfast, and Ann Callahan, Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast.

The final day was full of education from industry experts including a panel on OTAs for small properties, best practices for insuring an inn, a legal panel led by innkeepers and moderated by CABBI Member Legal Advisor Jim Abrams, and much more. The 2016 conference concluded with a special general session led by Lisa Kolb of Acorn Internet Services. Lisa covered “What Google Wants” and provided a final dose of education to our innkeepers before the conclusion of the event.

The 2016 Trade Show was a record sell out!

This year's InnSpire Trade Show was are largest to date with over 50 vendors! This year InnSpire featured many new, and repeat exhibitors, both with a variety of exciting new products and services. There were plenty of opportunities for attendees to meeting one-on-one with our vendors and hear about the latest and greatest in Internet marketing, guest amenities, textiles, hotel financing, property management systems and more. “I think the timing is done very well, giving enough time between sessions as well as not giving too much time between sessions. The length of time the trade show floor is open is done well too.” – 2016 InnSpire Exhibitor

“It was a lot of fun to talk to everyone, and I thought it was really, really well organized.” – 2016 InnSpire Exhibitor

“While InnSpire is one of the smaller shows we have attended, we thought the event was very well done and brought together a lot of interested (and interesting!) people who are committed to what they do. Talking with them gave us further insight into what really matters to innkeepers today.” – 2016 InnSpire Exhibitor

Innkeeping as a Profession (IAP) Workshop

Prior to the conference, 19 aspiring innkeepers attending the annual Innkeeping as a Profession (IAP) workshop held at the Monterey Marriott January 30-31. These B&B-hopefuls spent two-days immersed in the industry with expert speakers and veteran innkeepers. Coming from all over the country, this years’ IAP attendees were energetic and eager to get into the industry. Ten of them even stayed for the full conference.
