InnSpire 2015 - Inspiration in Sonoma County

The 2015 InnSpire Conference & Trade ShowSM, hosted by CABBI, was held February 8-10 at the DoubleTree Sonoma Wine Country in Rohnert Park. Conference attendees experienced several days of incomparable educational workshops and a sold out trade show.

2015 Conference Highlights

The show was kicked off on Sunday afternoon with a general session featuring TripAdvisor. Speaker Brian Payea covered traveler’s habits and what innkeepers can expect in 2015 and beyond. After the opening session, innkeepers were invited onto our trade show floor to enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres, and meet our exhibitors. The education continued on Monday with the popular Roundtable Sessions, featuring 11 topics from industry experts, covering inn sales, online directory listings, insurance, CABBI membership and more.

Monday closed with the InnSpire Hollywood Dinner, where vendors and innkeepers joined in for a night of wine, food and fun. Guests were entertained during the presentation of the CABBI Shining Star awards, which categories included “First Attendee to Register for InnSpire,” “Furthest Vendor in Attendance,” “Largest Travel Guide Order,” and “Longest Time Spent on the Tarmac,” just to name a few. Dinner guests also enjoyed dressing up and posing for the Hollywood-themed photo booth.

The final day was full of education from industry experts including an employment law update, learning what Google wants from websites, tips and information on how innkeepers can attract Chinese travelers, a look at revenue management for B&Bs and small inns, and more. During lunch attendees joined panelists in for a unique look into reality TV and innkeeping.

The “What I learned from Hotel Impossible” was an intriguing general session, where innkeepers from Purple Orchid Inn and the Holbrook Hotel discussed their experience on the Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible and the takeaways that helped their inns succeed. The panel discussed how, although it is not usually anyone’s best interest to expose their imperfections, they were able to use this to their advantage in the end.

 Whether they were being secret shopped or entered themselves to partake in the show, the innkeepers learned and were reminded that doing things like regular maintenance and delegating tasks in a timely manner, can make all the difference in managing an inn. Changing habits like making sure as an innkeeper or manager you walk through the front of the inn each day, as if you’re a guest and seeing the inn for the first time, can help to keep an innkeeper ahead any problems and ensure that guests receive the best experience possible.  Our panelist let the group know that they have seen the amount of happy guests increased since their episode aired, how the show has impacted the relationships with their guest through their shared story, and making the essential changes has provided a better experience at their inns.

Innkeeping as a Profession (IAP) Workshop

Before the main conference, 16 aspiring innkeepers attended the two-day Innkeeping As a Profession (IAP) workshop to learn about the industry and what it takes to run a bed and breakfast on a day-to-day basis. This year's attendees were a really engaged group of professionals who brought a lot of excitement to the weekend. We can't wait to see where they go in the future!
