InnSpire 2012 - All Aboard to Sacramento

The 2012 InnSpire Conference & Trade Show hosted by the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) was recently held at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza in Downtown Sacramento, CA. Conference attendees experienced two days of intense educational workshops and a trade show packed with attendee-exclusive discount offers, along with an exclusive dinner event at the California State Railroad Museum.

Here's what InnSpire 2012 attendees are saying:

Would not miss this wonderful event!” - Carol Beazley, Beazley House Bed & Breakfast, Napa, CA

“Learned a whole lot (like I do every year) from speakers, sessions, roundtables, and networking.  Definitely worth the price and expenses of attending.” - Doug Cook, Brannan Cottage Inn, Calistoga, CA

2012 Conference Highlights

The annual California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) InnSpire Conference and Trade Show was held January 22 – 24, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza in Sacramento, CA. Attendees gathered in the capital city for education and networking.

On Sunday afternoon, attendees enjoyed some exclusive time in the trade show with exhibitors, as well as hors d' oeuvres and the NFL playoffs.

Monday night's “Strike Gold” reception and dinner were a big hit, in part because of the unique venue – the California State Railroad Museum. Founding member and CABBI's first president, Don Martine of the Martine Inn in Pacific Grove, was inducted the California Hotel & Lodging Association Hall of Fame, much to his surprise and the delight of his peers. “The dinner at the Railroad Museum was perfect!  Perfect location, wonderful food and a well deserved award to Don Martine,” said Michele Berry of The Morgan in San Simeon. Unlike other segments of the hospitality industry where staffing is large enough to permit employees to focus on individual areas of expertise, bed and breakfast innkeepers wear dozens of hats, ranging from chef to gardener to housekeeper to online marketing strategist. Workshops included "Advanced Google Analytics," "Social Media 101," PCI Compliance, ADA Updates and a session on Rural Tourism. [See a full Conference Schedule recap here] Back by popular demand were the quick-fire Q&A session titled "Ask and Innkeeper" and "The Yin and Yang of Rate and Occupancy: Revenue Management for B&B Owners" both presented by members of the CABBI Council.

This year's InnSpire Trade Show featured many new and repeat exhibitors, both with a variety of exciting new products. Conference attendees could see, smell and touch the amenities offered. There were opportunities to talk one-on-one with Internet marketing companies, insurance providers, amenity suppliers, photographers and more.

Innkeeping as a Profession (IAP) Workshop

Before the main conference, 11 aspiring innkeepers attended the two-day Innkeeping As a Profession (IAP) workshop to learn about the industry and what it takes to run a bed and breakfast on a day-to-day basis. Here's what IAP attendees had to say:

"I thought is was comprehensive and informitive, with the right amount of variety and exposure to various types of inns."

"An excellent introduction to the B&B industry for someone like me who wants a career change and thinks this might be it!"
